Meet
Jean Sbarra Jones
welcome
I am best known for my art, my teaching and my love of color. I teach at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. One student said her new experience of color after taking my class was like “walking through a coloring book.”
I am a social introvert. I love to be around people but need time alone to recharge. I am relatively artsy, love to read lengthy intelligent fiction but also watch reality TV. I love fashion, running and ice cream. My husband is a theatre artist, actor and professor. We travel to London and Edinburgh every summer with a large group of students. We see approximately 20 theatre productions in two weeks. Theatre has become an integral part of my life and inspires a dramatic element to my work.
In addition to painting commissions, I am a gallery artist. I received a Master’s of Fine Art from Boston University. I have exhibited widely, received grants for residencies and been published most recently in Poets/Artists magazine, AcrylicWorks5 and Studio Visit Magazine. My work has been shown at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art and RJD Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY. Among my collectors is the late Kenneth Noland, a well-known 1960’s color field painter. I recently had a solo exhibition at Alpha Gallery in Boston.
First Dance
I make paintings that help recreate memories of special events, particularly unique moments in wedding ceremonies and /or receptions. I am a romantic and cry at weddings. Therefore, my work is more about the remembered feeling of an event, rather than its documentation. My impressionist paintings recreate the mood and atmosphere, unique to each event. Light is always a major character.
First Dance paintings make unique wedding gifts from a parent a spouse, a friend or members of the bridal party. Often the painting is a surprise to the recipient. I work with my clients to find the perfect photograph to capture the mood of the moment. If a professional photographer’s work is used, photo credit is always given whenever the painting is posted and a shout out to the venue if applicable.
The paintings are impressionist in style. They are painted from reference photographs with permission and collaboration of a professional wedding photographer. The paintings are high quality acrylic paint on wood panels. The panels are mounted on a finely finished 3/4 inch wooden border which is painted off white. Thus, framing is not needed. For a more finished look, I offer an option to purchase a high quality floater frame in white, black or natural wood for an additional price.

“What a unique way to remember your special day, and also see it from a new perspective. Jean’s work is incredible with amazing attention to detail. I surprised my wife with the piece on our anniversary and she loved it. Thank you, Jean!”
